When you are looking at purebred dogs, each breed will exhibit certain characteristics.

Border collies, for instance, are instantly recognizable by their distinctive black and white markings and boundless energy. They are incredibly intelligent and need a job to do that will keep them occupied. This is a generalization that fits this breed. There are some Border Collies that are less energetic and some come in red and white. So, when you are learning about the breeds you are interested in, understand that the characteristics ascribed to that breed are generally what these dogs are bred for.

Individual dogs within that breed may still vary a little bit.

If you need to have a small dog because you live in an apartment or city, there are many to choose, pet, from. Small dogs include Toy Poodles, Yorkshire Terriers, Chihuahuas, Corgis and Bulldogs, just to name a few. Bulldogs are between 12 and 16 inches high and moderately inactive. They are somewhat unfriendly to other dogs and strangers, but can be devoted to their family. They have a short coat that needs regular brushing. They can be challenging to train.

Chihuahuas, one of the most popular breeds, only needs occasional grooming. They are fairly inactive and may not get along with strangers or other dogs. They are a good watch dog.

Medium sized dogs include breeds like the Basenji, American Eskimo, most spaniels and terriers and Whippets. The Cocker spaniel is a popular breed that needs regular grooming and is moderately active. They are very sociable with everyone they meet. They may be a bit challenging to train for new dog owners. Shetland Sheepdogs are a medium sized breed that is sociable and active.

They need to be groomed regularly and are easy to train.

Large sized dogs include the Akita, Australian Shepherd, Boxer, and Great Dane. Rottweilers, a very popular breed, belongs in this group. They require little grooming, but they are very active and protective. They can be aggressive and unsociable. They need good training to fit in well with the average family. The Labrador Retriever is another breed that is often chosen for a pet. They are very active and need an outlet for their energy.

They are also very sociable and fairly easy to train.

These are just a few of the many breeds available. When you are looking at dogs and trying to make a decision, don’t go with the first one that catches your eye. Watch their energy levels. Are they aggressive or shy? Think about the general energy level in your home and try to choose a dog that will fit in easily.
