The green iguana is a beautiful animal in it’s own right. Learning more about them is what everyone who owns one, or would like to own one, should do. It is a problem therefore that many people, especially the people who have an iguana, have problems with fact and fiction.

The worst thing to do when owning an iguana is not to research them. If you do not research and find out exactly what an iguana needs then you could easily damage one.

One such example is the myth that a green iguana eats only lettuce.

OK, lettuce is fine in small doses, but only feeding it lettuce is a very bad idea. Lettuce doesn’t have the most nutritional value of vegetables and is not a good exchange for other foods. If this is all you feed your iguana then you suddenly change to better foods because your vet enlightens you, your iguana will most likely reject it and stick to what it’s used to, lettuce.

You must be reading this because you have a keen interest either in animals or iguanas. If you want, pet, to look after your iguana, or indeed any animal, correctly then you need to feed it the right food! An iguana does not eat insects, despite what people may say.

The best food for an iguana is vegetables. If you want a healthy iguana with no kidney problems, take my advice.

If you want to have a happy iguana, you should feed it a wide variety of foods with a good level of nutrition.

Another thing to consider about your pet green iguana is his housing. Please take care when purchasing a cage, even if the guy at the store recommends a lovely small one. An iguana can grow to around 6 feet. Imagine a 6 foot iguana in a small cage, does this seem fair to you? A common problem is that people believe a small cage will stop them growing and give you a small iguana.

This is completely wrong and will only serve to frustrate and damage your iguana. Use your common sense, a 6 foot iguana in a 3 foot cage will not work, just like you sleeping in a closet would not work.

In summary, to have a green iguana is a wonderful thing, but be sure to treat them with respect. This means a proper sized cage and good food. If you feel you can’t offer this, please seek help in re-homing your pet iguana.
