Just like humans a nutritional diet can build up their immune system to prevent illnesses and assist the parrot to a have a longer, happy lifespan up to 6o years depending on the type of bird.
Exactly, what kind of diet do we feed out parrot friends. Our scientific community has not done enough research in the area of diets that provide longevity for parrots in the tropics and rain forests.
There has not been enough scientific data collected to determine the perfect diet for our pet parrots. Experts have agreed that a total seed diet is not an appropriate diet for most parrots to keep them happy. If they actually thrive a total diet base seed diet is a tribute to how robust they are not that their diet is balanced. Seeds are too high in fat and do not contain enough nutrients such as calcium and vitamin A. Seeds should make up about ten per cent (10%) of the total parrot diet. Some of the smaller parrots like love birds, cockatiel and budgies, who are natural seed eaters, can endure with approximately twenty-five percent (25%) mixture of seed in their normal diets.
Pellet foods provide a balanced, nutritional diet. The composition of the pellets includes seeds, grains, fruits, vegetables and selected mixture of vitamins and minerals. Parrots crave stimulation and like a variety of foods. Fifty to sixty percent (50% to 60%) of a parrot diet consists of pellet food you can purchase from a pet store.
Also, a thoughtful owner should provide their, pet, birds with fresh garden vegetables and fresh fruits that are organic. Chemicals from pesticides and herbicides will damage their internal organs.
The fruits and veggies are additional to the parrot diet can be chopped or left in large chucks. The large birds love to use their feet to hold the chunks and gnaw on the bits. Owners can hang chunks between the bars on the side of the cage to provide the pet bird with stimulation. A wide variety and mixture of fresh fruits and vegetables provide a well rounded variety of nutrition and can consist of corn, carrots, green beans, eggplant, cauliflower, sweat potatoes, bell peppers, cucumber and other garden vegetables.
During the growing season these can be obtained from the owner’s garden.
These exotic birds love fresh fruits especially the ones that grown in the wild, such as, pomegranates, papaya, mangos, kiwi, pineapple, and melons. They also like local grown fruits, such as, apples, oranges, peaches, grapes, oranges, cherries, and bananas. The owner should make sure their pet bird does not consume the pits or seeds from these fruits because they can become toxic. Other toxic foods that should not be fed to their bird are alcohol, caffeine, avocado, guacamole, cocoa or chocolate, and mushrooms.
Provide all natural foods for the parrot that do not contain large amounts of grease, sugar, salt, preservatives, those big word food additives and coloring.
Additional sources of nutrients for their birds are grains such as cooked brown rice, barley, wheat, whole wheat breads, oats, pasta, and whole wheat cereals that do not contain sugars. Prevent malnutrition by good parrot care. Make sure a well balanced diet from the food sources given above and you will have a very happy, healthy parrot.
These are such sensitive birds and need tender loving care. Maybe we should look at our own diets. These birds are eating better than most humans!
