I guess right about now you are sitting at your kitchen table with your dog fence kit thinking what have I got myself into now? Well if you pull the parts out of the kit you will find you have a transmitter, a receiver collar, probes, a battery and most likely a 500 foot roll of 20ga wire.
I guess right about now you are sitting at your kitchen table with your dog fence kit thinking what have I got myself into now? Well if you pull the parts out of the kit you will find you have a transmitter, a receiver collar, probes, a battery and most likely a 500 foot roll of 20ga wire. This is enough to do about a 1/4 acre, if your intent was to enclose more area than this you need contact the place where you purchased it from and but an additional wire kit or kits.It is time now to think about the area you want to section off to contain your pet within.
As a general rule your are much better off to fully encompass the house as all doors are protected from escape. If you want to just contain the front yard or the back yard you will need to run what is called a double loop because the wire must form a continuous circuit. In forming this continuous circuit the wires must be kept 4 to 5 feet apart. If the wires are placed to close together the signals will interfere with each other and cause dead zones in the fence.Usually this means for front yard installs crossing the driveway twice.
Asphalt or concrete you will need two saw cuts, gravel you will, pet, be excavating with a pick and shovel twice. Again I suggest going completely around the house.During your layout of where to place the wire remember two things, the first is the transmitter must be protected from the weather and the second is you must make a continuous circuit. I know I said this before but I must repeat myself on this point, it is important. If you have areas of the yard you would like to make off limits such as gardens, trash cans, flower beds, children’s play area this is the time to include them in your layout plansI suggest sitting down with your spouse and drawing out a plan.
Some of the Perimeter kits sold on http://www.pcsofnystore.com have both 18 ga wire, heavier duty, and twisted wire which makes your installation easier.
This will be discussed in my next article.
