Picking out a rescue pet has pitfalls, pet, that one must consider above and beyond the normal issues involved with bringing home a new pet. Hopefully this article will give you some pointers to help your process along, and get you both started on the right feet in your new lives together. Remember, whichever pet you are bringing home, needs to come home forever.

The first choice you must make is age, if you are able consider an older dog, please do. Puppies have a much easier time finding homes, and it is my experience older dogs appreciate a good home and bond with their humans just as quickly.

And contrary to the old adage, older dogs do learn new tricks pretty fast, once they get to know their new home. Many are just delighted to be home at last with a family to love, and older dogs already know things like not going to the bathroom in the house.

The second choice you must make is breed, you need to consider the genetic makeup of your new pet, and you need to make sure it will fit your lifestyle. Having animals like horses means no herding dogs or they could get hurt. I promise you they will not learn to not chase horses, chasing livestock is what they are born to do.

If you live in an apartment, you are better off with a small breed dog. Even if your current living arrangement lets you have a big dog, you may have to move in the future and your new apartment may not let you have that dog. And if you hate wet dogs, don’t get a water loving Labrador, neither of you will be happy with that choice later.

The last choice you need to make is where to get your new dog. If you have love for a specific breed, then purebred rescue is a great way to start. Get on a list and wait for the right dog to come to you.

Some of the rarer breeds may take a while for you to find a pet, but if you have a specific idea in mind of what to do with the dog (say you wish to hunt with a bird dog) than this is by far the best way to go. You will get a pet able to work with you in your chosen field. What you won’t get is a pet able to reproduce, all rescues will insist on the spaying or neutering of your pet before you are ready to bring it home. If you wish to bring one home from the pound, and you just want a good pet, consider that a black male dog over the age of one will have the hardest time finding a home, and you can make the difference of a lifetime to that pet by bringing him home.
