Before you purchase a chinchilla to keep as a pet you will need to make sure that you provide them with somewhere to live. There are plenty of chinchilla cages available and there are certain things one should take into consideration before you make this all important purchase. Remember the right cage will provide the perfect home that your pet chinchilla will enjoy living in.

So what sorts of things should you be taking into consideration in order to determine which cage will be best for the chinchilla you intend to keep as a pet? Below we provide some tips that you may find useful.

Tip 1 – Cage Size

This happens to be one of the most important things you need to take into consideration. What is important to remember is that chinchillas don’t just like to climb but also to jump around. You should choose a cage that provides a lot of height rather than width. Although cages for Parrots or Ferrets are cheaper they really are not suitable instead go for those specifically designed for housing chinchillas.

The great thing about taller cages is that they come with a number of different levels to them so providing the ideal environment to allow yours to climb.

This means that your chinchilla even when in their cage will be provided with exercise that they will enjoy and which will ensure that, pet, they remain healthy.

Tip 2 – Cage Material

This after the size is very important factor to be taken into consideration. Today you have the option to go for ones made from either plastic or metal. However, in all honesty those made from plastic really are not suitable for housing a chinchilla in.

When it comes to chinchilla cages made from metal they may cost more but you will find them far much easier to maintain.

The problem of course with plastic ones is that chinchillas like to chew and will cause considerable damage to these kinds very quickly. Once damaged they become hard to clean and so there is a greater risk of bacteria being able to grow in them. This in turn will result in health problems for your pet.

Tip 3 – Cage Floor

When it comes to this area of the cage you will notice that some have floors that are designed to sit on top a pan, whilst others come with a solid floor. But whatever of these styles of floors for chinchilla cages you choose to have in yours make sure that you can actually remove it so cleaning it becomes considerably easier.

Another thing you should look for if you are intending to move your chinchilla’s cage on a regular basis then look for ones that come with wheels on the base. Remember not only are these cages large they will weigh quite a lot compared to say a cage in which a ferret, rabbit or parrot will be kept. So having wheels on the base (preferably ones that you can lock) will make moving the cage from one location to another far easier.
