Know Why Your Dog is Whining
One thing that you have to keep in mind is that a dog or puppy will whine when it is deprived of something that they want. If the thing they want is merely an oversight on your part (forgot their blanket, forgot to feed them, etc.) then you should give in and alleviate the problem. If they are whining for reasons that you do not understand or do not want them to have something then you need to stick to your guns, be firm and assertive and not give in.
If a dog is cold they may whine as well due to their discomfort. As stated before you need to make sure you know the reasons behind the whining before punishing the dog or establishing guidelines for behavior modification.
Some dog breeds are more prone to whining, howling and yapping at things unseen and you should avoid them at all costs as family dogs. If you live out in the country and do not have neighbors nearby then this may not matter to you as long as you have your hearing aid turned down.
If your dog has never whined in the past and is suddenly whining the chances are that they have some sort of sickness or injury that you are not aware of. This should necessitate a trip to the veterinarian’s office for a check up. Once the problem has been treated your pet should return to their pre injury state and not whine much in the future.
Other reasons dogs whine is to get attention and to let their owners know that they are ready to play. If it is not convenient to drop everything and play with your pet you need to teach them that a firm “No” means they need to stop whining immediately.
Once you have established that “No” to stop a dog from whining you need to make sure you praise them when they stop on your command phrase.
Separation anxiety can create whining in dogs as well. To combat this you need to start with small amounts of time with the dog in a room by itself, gradually increasing the intervals until the dog is comfortable being alone.
