We love our pets, don’t we? Maybe yours is sitting nearby right now, flashing those big puppy dog eyes or purring just so sweetly. Yes, it’s easily decided that the ups of having a pet far outweigh the downs – providing, of course, you know how to take care of those downs. Your dog or cat is there to cuddle, to play a game, to guard the house, to be a companion…and to have accidents. Hey, it happens. We all make mistakes.

Your dog is probably stronger and healthier than most humans that you know. However, by taking him from his natural environment, where only the strongest survive, to the artificial one in which most pet dogs live, we have exposed him to an entirely new set of dangers which their instincts are not designed to cope with.

When choosing a pet for their child, many parents are more inclined to choose a hamster over a rat. They see the hamster as cute and cuddly. Rats are associated with sewers, dark alleyways, and being dirty. But rats actually make for a better pet. Hamsters will almost always bite when they are picked up from their cage.

Pet owners consider their beloved animals as friends, companions, and probably, as another member of the family. The law however views them only as property and without the proper planning a pet may be inadvertently destined to suffer and a live the remainder of its life without the care it is accustomed to because its owner did not know or was not well advised to establish a plan.
