Growing up my family adopted a dog named Peter. He was a mutt but he looked like he was a mix between a Husky and a Labrador. He was a great dog and he lived until he was about 15. At that age he developed cancer and we had to put him to sleep. My parents had asked me to do it since he was mostly my dog. At the time I was devastated that they were asking me to do it.

And if you have not yet read up on it I would strongly recommend you do it now as it is very helpful for your own healing. Sometimes our inability to cope with the death of a pet is caused by our unwillingness to “release the relationship” and free ourselves of the pain. Why would we not want to release the relationship stems from various emotions, like guilt, anger, resentment which are all based in fear, basically the fear of moving on.

Anyone who has allowed a pet to become a part of their life understands that a pet is a member of your family. When you lose that pet, whether unexpectedly or from old age, it does not change the fact that a hole has been left in your life.
