Growing up my family adopted a dog named Peter. He was a mutt but he looked like he was a mix between a Husky and a Labrador. He was a great dog and he lived until he was about 15. At that age he developed cancer and we had to put him to sleep. My parents had asked me to do it since he was mostly my dog. At the time I was devastated that they were asking me to do it.

The process of coping with pet death, the grief associated with the loss has been talked about for a very long time, we are all educated of the 5 or 7 stages of grief. And if you have not yet read up on it I would strongly recommend you do it now as it is very helpful for your own healing. What I would like to talk about is the benefits of using visualization while coping with the death of a pet.

Sometimes our inability to cope with the death of a pet is caused by our unwillingness to “release the relationship” and free ourselves of the pain. Why would we not want to release the relationship stems from various emotions, like guilt, anger, resentment which are all based in fear, basically the fear of moving on.

If one of your beloved pets has recently passed away, you may be looking for some way to memorialize your pet and to find closure for your loss. Perhaps the best way to accomplish both of these goals is to hold a funeral on behalf of your pet. Holding a funeral to pay respects to a pet that has past away is a great way for you to show your love and respect for the pet you have lost.

Anyone who has allowed a pet to become a part of their life understands that a pet is a member of your family. When you lose that pet, whether unexpectedly or from old age, it does not change the fact that a hole has been left in your life. You still need to take the time to grieve your loss until someday, you feel able to celebrate your pet’s life.
