In 1991, two bird breeders in New Zealand, Richard and Valerie James, changed the feed they gave to their birds. The new feed was based on soy protein. They soon started to notice changes. Some of their birds developed fully-coloured plumage within just a few months instead of the normal one-and-a-half to two years. The Jameses were concerned but the feed manufacturers said it was a good thing.
