“How do I explain this to my kids?” I find that many parents do not know how to talk to kids about death. I worked in bereavement care at a funeral home for fourteen years caring for children and their families when death occurred. While my major focus was on people, I often received phone calls about a cat, a dog or even a goldfish that just died.

If we had to name two things children want, it could be easily covered under the titles, pets and toys. We all loved toys as children and still love our pets even as adults. Pets play an important role in their owners’ lives. Some pets have even been known to save lives and learn to dial 911 in an emergency. As companions, they provide us with warmth and friendship, as well as undying loyalty.

Pet ownership offers so many benefits to kids it isn’t even funny. Still, you need to educate your kids on the responsibilities of having a pet or things can turn tragic. Educating children about pets can be a difficult task. This is especially true of younger children who have a hard time telling the difference between the household cat and that cute stuffed animal in their toy box.
